About the book

Susruta Samhita is one of the three Brhattrayi texts of the classical Ayurveda and is the chief treatise of its surgical school i.e. Dhanvantra Sampradaya founded by Dhanvantri. According to the commentator Dalhana etymologically "Dhanvantri" signifies full expertise in surgery i.e. " Dhanuh". As mentioned by Caraka, the generaal physicians were epected to refer surgical patients to these surgical experts - "Tantra Dhanvantariyanamahikarah". The presently available version of Susruta samhita has evolved throughly multiple transformations and redactions by many scholars time to time over several hundred years.
